Business Promotion vs Spamming

I often wonder where the fine line between business promotion and spamming is drawn on the various social networking medias? On Facebook I will see numerous links by the same people day in and day out. Some of the links are not even explained as to what they are and the same goes for Twitter. Do these daily posting actually bring in business or are they an irritant to the people who receive them? The reason I am asking this is, on Facebook they only allow so many post of friends to be in your newsfeed but I have learned some folks are hiding some of their friends post. Rainmaker wrote a post Are you a Facebook Friend Who Gets Hidden. I think her post is well written and does bring up a valid point. Where is the fine line of intrusion vs respectable business practice?

At one point I considered advertising on Facebook but after learning they limit the amount of post one sees, I decided it would only be helping Facebook business and not my own. Like anyone of us who owns a business, of course we want to display our products to a large number of customers. Although I have to say, I have been guilty of tossing out unwanted advertisements that arrived in my mailbox almost daily. I have caller ID to avert the telemarkers from calling all hours of the day and night. So how is social media networking any different than what we ourselves do not want? Is there a formula, a specific calculation that makes our business more desirable than others? Or, do we just risk having ourselves hidden from, Fans, Followers, or Friends by sending post daily marketing our products?

Please understand, I am not striving to upset anyone with this post but only trying to educate myself how to be a respectable marketer in this sad economy. Looking forward to your comments. Thank You! Dona

Treasury and more things I do not know about Etsy

I have come to the conclusion I must be living in a time warp. By recently listing my wares on Etsy, I have been bombarded with a plethora of new Social Media avenues I have been told I need in order to shine on Etsy. I have been told about Stumbleupon and learning about this has my head spinning. Kaboodle, I have the account, now what? There is a Tumblr and the list goes on.

Today, I had a nice lady, I believe in Turkey, who put me in her Treasury on Etsy. Okay, what does a Treasury do and how does one go about having a Treasury? She tried to help me but when I went to Etsy and saw their Treasury link information, it was kind of confusing, well for me anyway. LOL!!! She had included my picture frame in her Green Treasury. Correct me if I am wrong, but lets say I am feeling the color puce today, then can I create a reddist brown Treasury? LOL!!! Okay, then how do I find all the rest of the puce items on Etsy? What I did not realize until now, she did not include a green item of her own, wonder why?

I guess I will have to check the library for the Etsy for Dummies book. Wonder if Donald Trump sell on Etsy, I am sure he would have a go to guy if he did. LOL!!!

My shop on Etsy is Homecraft Framing and Gifts ,would you be kind enough to take a look and let me know if I am doing something wrong or even right?

Thank You,
Dona

Spooky Halloween Picture Frames

Not quite frost on the pumpkin yet but it is right around the corner. I love to walk through the neighborhood in the evening and look at all of the Halloween decorations. One would think it is Christmas with all the lights and outdoor decorations on display.

So I was inspired to create Halloween picture frames with mats. I like the gothic purple of the Halloween skull picture frame and the slimey lime green of the scary vampire bat Halloween picture frame.

If you are looking for a spooky picture frame to showcase your ghoulie, ghostie or scary beastie, have I got the frame for you? You can either find these Halloween frames on my website at Homecraft Framing or Homecraft Framing on Etsy .

I would like to thank all of the folks who have given me advice on how to do the shipping on Etsy, I appreciate your kindness. Happy Fall Y'all!

Etsy and Why I am Clueless

I have had my Etsy account since last November but only listed one thing because I cannot for the life of me figure out the international shipping. I listed three things last night and put the shipping for the USA only, because I am not sure what Etsy is asking me to do. It is kind of time consuming to figure out the shipping for each country and some of the countries I am not even sure about, non-the-less figuring the cost to ship to them. Am I making this harder than it should be? More than likely the answer is yes. LOL!!!

Another thing I am concerned about is, I also will list picture frames and I am concern about breakage being shipped overseas. I pack items well but I do not know how well my picture frames will travel to another country. I have never had a problem with Canada but they operate pretty much like the USPS anyway.

If you would be kind enough to let me know if I have done something wrong, I sure would appreciate your help. Thanks in advance, Dona http://www.etsy.com/shop/homecraftframing

Halloween Photo Mats

Do you ever go somewhere with the intention of doing one thing and end up doing another?

I went down to my shop to paint something for Halloween. While looking for a certain pattern I got distracted (as usual) and found a sheet of corrugated matboard, K & Company Halloween cardstock designs and my Sizzix Big Kick die cutter instead. Before I knew it, I was cutting mats and using some old scrap matboard with my Big Kick to make some wacky frame designs on my mats. The K & Company Halloween designs are so cute and really add a touch of goulish whimsey to the mats. Now, I have had this stuff for a few years and I wonder, why it always takes me so long to put things together? DUH!!!

Hey Eileen, do you recognize the die cutters I used? My husband asked if I were okay after seeing the cockeyed frames I made with the Big Kick. LOL!!! I did do a little painting, I painted the eyeballs on the 6X6 square mats.

Facebook Friends and Fan Pages 5000 Limit

I learned that Facebook has a limit on how many people you can friend and how many business pages you can fan. The two combined is 5000 and I have met my limit this past Friday. Like many of you, I used my personal profile page to get friends to fan my business and now I have 2548 people who are both my friend and fan at the same time. Which means, I can no longer make a friend or fan another business, unless I remove someone per Facebook suggestion. Since we are double linked, I cannot use Link Love to find other businesses to share the Link Love.

Have you ever considered having a Facebook Business Fan Page? The reason for this question is this, even if you meet your 5000 friend/fan limit, others will still be able to fan your business page. If you use your personal profile, you will only be able to have the friends you have, minus all the pages/groups you have fanned. So if you have harvested 2500 friends and you have fan/liked 2500 businesses, your personal profile will only 5000 combined.

I have 3485 fan at present on my business page, if you subtract 2548 friend/fans from this number, you will see that I have 937 people who have fanned my business without being my friend. You will never be able to have this with your personal profile only. Keep in mind if you have a friend who is also your fan, you cut the 5000 limit in half.

I am sure all of this is confusing but then again, Facebook seems to like it this way. Remember, Facebook wants you to use their advertising marketing tools to get people to fan you. Heck, I am a business owner and I understand their point of view but during this rocky economy I cannot afford to advertise my business. Believe me, Advertising a Business or not Advertising a Business, will make or break a Business.

When I found the Link Love I thought, this is a fantastic way for business to network without breaking the bank. Well that was, until I hit that magic 5000 Friend/Fan Page limit. LOL!!!

Thank you for reading this long winded Facebook saga but I did not know how to shorten it and have it make sense.

Decorative Mats

I have been laboring over the idea of selling mats on my website. Since anyone can purchase a mat at their favorite Mart store, it seemed silly to sell them on the internet. Then I thought, I could paint the mat, stamp the mat, decorate the mat with scrapbooking supplies or just do some unusual cuts on the mat. This way, these are mats you cannot find easily.

I guess I am blogging about this to get your opinion. Well, to be honest, I really do not want to put a bunch of new items on my website if it is a goofy idea. Messing with my website or even my blog somewhat scares me. I am afraid that if I goof something up, it will take me forever to figure out what I did and I am always goofing up something. LOL!!!

Anyway if you have an idea to share, I would love to hear from you.
